I figured it was time to check in with you all and give you an update on those all important new custom slots and tell you about a slightly different way that we will be approaching slot allocation over the next few months.
But first of all an update for my current customers waiting on having their carriers sewn. At this time sewing is going really well and I am getting through orders in a timely manner. But there have been delays and I am approximately 3 weeks behind on my sewing schedule. For those Mamas that are waiting on me sewing their carrier I will be emailing you after the weekend to run through your order details and go through my current sewing schedule with you.
I am not a fan of booking lots and lots of slots in advance preferring instead to have a workable schedule that I can manage without delays and I enjoy the peace of mind and the quicker turnaround on orders that goes with this. And so to this end I won't be offering any new slots for sewing in April. After catching up on these last few orders that I am working on currently I will be taking a week off to spend with my girls whilst they are on holiday from school for Easter (and I just might be celebrating my 42nd Birthday too !) before starting on a new sewing schedule in May.
These will be allocated on the 1st of May with a 2 week lead in time for customers to get their order forms completed and their wraps to the studio. Sewing will start on these new orders on the 15th of May and will be completed in 4 weeks. Now here is the important bit, we will NOT be taking any orders for Full Buckle Carriers in May.
Not always getting it right..............
In giving thought to exactly why I have ended up with quite a delay with my sewing schedule of late it occurred to me that it was for a whole number of reasons including unscheduled (non-emergency) hospital appts with my 7y old daughter Libby, sick kiddos, well actually both of these are typically manageable without impacting a great deal on my sewing schedule. So I thought on this some more. Work on the custom orders for January didn't start until the 2nd week of the month so in-fact they were always going to run into February but we had gone ahead and set up a whole months of customer orders to be sewn in February, February was a short month so the February schedule was hit by the January overlap and then the shorter month which pushed February orders in to March....ah so there it was, our scheduling was out from the beginning !
Getting back to the orginal plan.............
But there was something else that occurred to me. We have been getting a lot of orders for Full buckle carriers. When we set the number of custom orders each month we have no idea how many orders we will have for tie waist carriers, full buckle or half buckle carriers etc. Full buckle carriers are a more complex carrier to sew taking almost twice as long as the Tie waist or Clipee carriers to complete.
When I started out making carriers there were the people that made Mei Tais, People that made SSC, and People like me making Wrap Conversions. I never set out on my carrier making journey intending to be a WAHM that just makes SSC. Making Full Buckle carriers is hard work. I enjoy making Full Buckle carriers but not so much when it is all I have on my order sheet. Where possible I try and mix my sewing schedule up so that I have a mix of different style of carriers to sew across the week, recently I have been sewing more full buckle carriers than I have any other style of Wrap Conversion. I am finding I need to significantly increase the number of hours I am working each week to try and keep on top of my sewing schedule due to the extra time the Full Buckle carrier take me to sew.
Holding on to the all important Work Life Balance..................
In order to re-balance my family/work life I need to either commit to working more hours (I already work full-time on Ocah) or make less Full buckle carriers. Making less Full Buckle carriers feels like the happier compromise for me at this time. And so moving on, after the May allocation when there will be no full buckle carriers available (I will explain why in a mo) from June we will be making a set number of full buckle carriers available through a separate random draw or through pre-paid slots each month. This way we can plan our time better and manage the all important sewing schedule so that we don't get bogged down with these delays again.
So why no Full Buckle carriers in May ...................
In May (date yet to be confirmed) our 7 year old daughter is due to get an insulin pump which will help us to manage the Type 1 Diabetes that she was diagnosed with in April 2013. Getting an insulin Pump is going to be a huge learning curve for us and so I am keen not to over commit on my sewing schedule so that I can ensure that getting Libby used to the insulin Pump can be as stress free as possible. Wish us luck x
All by myself..................
Claire is going to be taking a few weeks out from Ocah to concentrate of some family commitments which means I will be running Ocah on my own for a while. I will be taking over doing all of the Ocah admin and I tend to work on it first thing in the morning and/or last thing at night so please bare with me if I don't respond to you email immediately. Claire will be back working with me in June.
Where are we at ? ...................
Well we are headed up yo our 6th Year Anniversary in May and aside from a few challenges that being a busy Mama of 4 gorgeous girls brings to running a business, life in the Ocah studio is working out pretty good right now. I can't wait to see what carriers I will be sewing this summer !
So now all that remains of this lengthy update is for me to say thank you to you all for your continued support.
P.S Did you see that the Ocah Face Book page reached 3000 likers ! woop !! amazing xx
